Man dies after he crashed into a utility pole Friday on the Eastern Shore

The driver was identified as 84-year-old Joseph Rice of Temperanceville. He was the only person in the Nissan. He died at the scene.

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. — A man died Friday afternoon on the Eastern Shore after he crashed into a utility pole.

According to a Virginia State Police spokesperson, this happened at around 2 p.m. The man was driving a 2021 Nissan Versa on Route 13/ Lankford Highway, at Mason Road. This is halfway between Centerville and Mappsville in Accomack County.

The police investigation indicated that the driver suddenly ran off the roadway and struck a utility pole.

The driver was identified as 84-year-old Joseph Rice of Temperanceville. He was the only person in the Nissan. He died at the scene.

Neither excessive speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash.
