Oceana-based jet that crashed, killing aviators, was flying on single engine

The Naval Safety Center said the F/A-18F Super Hornet had only one of its two engines operating when the jet went down March 14.

NAVAL AIR STATION OCEANA, Va. (WVEC) -- An F/A-18F Super Hornet that crashed during training in Florida earlier this month was flying on a single engine.

Lt. Cmdr. James Brice Johnson and Lt. Caleb Nathaniel King were on board the jet, which is based at Naval Air Station Oceana. Both aviators died.

SQUADRON RETURNS TO OCEANA AFTER FATAL CRASH

Although the Naval Safety Center said only one of the Super Hornet's two engines was operating, it did not say why.

The jet, which is assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron Two One Three (VFA-213), was on approach to Boca Chica Field at Naval Air Station Key West when it went down on March 14.
