NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Our VERIFY team is getting several questions about a post on social media warning about a scam involving the use of Dominion Energy's logo on flyers people are receiving by mail.
The Facebook post claims the documents are fake because although the envelopes have the Dominion logo on them, when you open the envelopes, the flyers inside actually are from another company.
The flyer says that as a homeowner, you are responsible for the full cost of repairing your interior gas line or your exterior water line, but you could receive coverage for just a few dollars a month.
Our VERIFY team reached out to Dominion Energy spokeswoman Bonita Billingsley Harris to ask if the letters are legitimate. She said they are and stressed they are not part of a scam.
Billingsley Harris told us the letters are coming from a company called HomeServe. Dominion partnered with the business to market home protection plans. Dominion Energy also allowed HomeServe to use the Dominion branding.
Dominion said it did not sell customer mailing addresses to HomeServe, but that the company bought a mailing list from a data vendor.
So if you see a Facebook post saying these flyers are a scam, do not share the post, because we can VERIFY that the flyers are legitimate as an endorsed partnership with Dominion Energy.
We also should note that HomeServe USA is accredited with the Better Business Bureau.
