PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- An armed and dangerous suspect is on the run in Hampton Roads following a police pursuit.
Officials tell us the pursuit began in Chesapeake early Tuesday morning and ended in Portsmouth after the suspect fired at officers, then escaped.
Virginia State Police have now taken over the investigation.
Dispatchers said they received a call just before 4:30 a.m. about an attempted traffic stop in the 2100 block of South Military Highway, where officers attempted to stop a Ford Mustang for a traffic violation.
The driver failed to stop and led officers on a chase into the city of Portsmouth.
The chase ended in the 2800 block of Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth at a trailer park. The driver exited the car and attempted to flee the scene on foot.
While attempting to flee, he shot at officers as they pursued him. State police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya confirmed police also fired their weapons, but would not say how many officers fired or how many rounds were shot.
Police say no one was injured.
A police K-9 tried to track the suspect, with no success.
Officers are still looking for the suspect, who has not been identified. No detailed description of the suspect has been released.
