Drivers try to be cautious in winter storm

Some drivers took precautions before heading out on the road in the snow, but VDOT said crashes still happened.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WVEC) — A large amount of snow in Williamsburg caused many people to get prepared quickly Sunday night.

Germaine Williams is taking all precautions before hitting the road with his family after over four inches of snow fell to the ground.

"I'm pumping up my tires to make sure they have even pressure, my sensor said it was low. In order to move through the snow, you need that even pressure, it allows you to gain better traction,” said Williams.

Emergency vehicles worked their way down to accidents on 64 throughout the night. It's something VDOT spokesman Dave Forster says the agency hoped to avoid.

"Crews are out treating the roads and Williamsburg residency, we're also watching bridges and overpasses primarily for freezing,” said Forester. But Williams never expected snow to even come.

"When they make predictions I say maybe-maybe; not this time, it was a definitely,” said Williams. Williams spent hours helping other drivers get out of trouble.

"We helped out different cars, I mean 10-15 cars, we've seen it all,” said Williams.
