KITTY HAWK, N.C. (WVEC) -- Astronomically high tides and ferocious winds were barreling through the Outer Banks on Friday.
The National Weather Service said wind gusts up to 60 mph can be expected and flooding as high as four feet above ground level.
According to NC DOT, flooding is most prevalent on the sound side with roads hard to pass.
"Over the next few days, this storm has the potential to damage property and flood neighborhoods and roads, especially those on Hatteras Island," said Dare County Emergency Management Spokesperson Drew Pearson. "Everyone should keep an eye on the weather and be ready for impacts."
Colington Road in Kill Devil Hills had several patches of flooded waters.
Bill Meyer, Owner of boatyard Bill's Marine, said the flooded waters prevented customers from coming.
"You know its fairly pretty steady here but you know when people cant get to you it sure does slow things down," said Meyer.
However, drivers who drove through the several foot deep water said flooding is normal and to be expected.
"It took awhile to get through there," said driver Todd Wheless. "But it's like this all the time, whenever the wind is right."
In a press release, Dare County Emergency Management said it advises residents and visitors to use caution due to flooding, specifically during periods of high tide.
