VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A major fire broke out at Legends at the Beach apartment complex early Thursday morning.
Emergency dispatchers said the call about the fire at 3100 Hunters Chase Drive came in around 4:30 a.m. The complex is off of South Lynnhaven Road.
A maintenance worker is the person who called dispatchers, after seeing flames coming from the roof of one of the buildings.
Eight families were displaced. No one was hurt.
The Thursday fire was not the first fire at the complex. There was another large fire at the apartments about six years ago, that displaced 23 people.
One woman, Jennifer Stanislaus, said she was at the complex when the fire broke out on May 19, 2015, and couldn't believe another large fire happened almost exactly six years later.
"I lived on the other side and it was just scary to see it happening all over again," said Stanislaus. "I'm nervous, but safe... kind of. I'm just praying it won't happen again."
Fire crews said there are no firewalls in the units and the buildings have an older structure, so that could be a contributing factor to why they've caught fire several times.
Residents said they were grateful for the employee who called 911 to help them get out in time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
