SUFFOLK, Va., (WVEC) -- Nine people were displaced after a fire damaged an apartment complex Friday, spokeswoman Diana L. Klink said in a news release.
Around 1:14 a.m. in the 2200 block of East Washington Street, Suffolk Fire & Rescue arrived on scene to a fire at Hoffler Apartments.
Crews found a two-story apartment complex with heavy smoke billowing from a second-floor unit at the rear of the building, Battalion Chief Demetri Wilson said.
The fire was contained to a second-story bedroom. The residents were alerted by a smoke detector and had evacuated before firefighters arrived.
The fire was under control at 1:32 a.m. There were no injuries.
One adult and eight children were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The Fire Marshal’s Office will be investigating the cause of the fire.
