Family displaced following Portsmouth townhome fire

A working smoke detector alerted the family to get out in time.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — One adult and four children were displaced from their home after a fire broke out Tuesday morning in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Fire and EMS crews were called to the 100 block of Lexington Drive shortly after 9:30 a.m. The fire appeared to have started in an upstairs bedroom, and a smoke alarm activated, alerting the residents to get out of the building.

One person inside the home was evaluated by EMS crews on-scene. The Red Cross will assist the displaced family.

The fire was marked out at 10:09 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
