Boy charged in shooting of Portsmouth officer admits to being in gang

The teenager stood crying in front of a judge at the 15-year-old's arraignment.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- A judge said Wednesday that a 15-year-old boy accused of trying to kill a police officer admitted he was a member of a gang.

The sophomore at I.C. Norcom High School cried at his arraignment as he stood before the judge who said the teenager acknowledged he was part of the 300 Gang.

Investigators said the 15-year-old shot a police officer in the 2500 block of Hickory St. on Monday when she tried to take him into custody. The officer recognized that the boy was a runaway. He is accused of pulling out a gun and shooting the officer five times when she attempted to put handcuffs on him.

Tuesday night, the officer was awake and talking after undergoing two surgeries.

The 15-year-old faces several charges including Attempted Capital Murder.

On November 29, he could be certified to stand trial as an adult. If that happens, the charges would then go to a grand jury.
