Newport News Police seize guns, drugs and money during traffic stop

Business owners in the area said the area is pretty quiet, so they were shocked to learn about what police found.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — What started as a traffic stop for a broken tag light, turned into a big bust in Newport News.

Police said they stopped a car near Warwick and Hickory Point Boulevard on Monday night. Officers said they smelled marijuana inside the car.

After searching the car, police said they found not just marijuana, but plastic bags, a scale, money, and four guns. Police said one of the guns is stolen from another state.

Police said three people were inside the car: Yahsein Lyons, a 17-year-old and 18-year-old Jahliq Taylor.

Luisa Johnson is the owner of Lujos Alterations and Tailoring at the corner of Warwick and Hickory Point. “We never heard about that around here and I have been here 8 years,” Johnson said. “I’m shocked.

Pedro Nunez owns Aqui Como Yo restaurant next door. He said this is a military area, with Fort Eustis being right around the corner, so police activity is rare around here.

“Maybe the individuals come from somewhere else because we never hear anything and nothing bad happens around here,” Nunez said. “It’s like, wow, because we're not used to seeing that around here. We didn't even hear about it.”

Taylor is charged with PWID Marijuana, Driving without a License, and Improper Rear Light. Lyons was issued a summons for Concealed Weapon. The 17-year-old passenger was charged with Receive Stolen or Aid in Concealing Firearm, Concealed Weapon, and Possession of Firearm Under 18.
