Body found in Hampton believed to be that of boater who went missing near HRBT

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission has confirmed that a body was retrieved from the Chesapeake Bay Saturday.

HAMPTON, Va. — Officials believe they have found the body of the 58-year-old man who jumped out of a boat to get a net near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) earlier this week.

The U.S. Coast Guard says officials with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission recovered a body on Saturday near the Grand View Beach area.

On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard reported that he was on a 20-foot fishing boat and jumped in the water near the HRBT to get a net out of the water. Another person on board the boat called 911.

Since Thursday, multiple agencies have assisted in the search. Battalion Chief Bruce Wilds with the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue previously told 13News Now an underwater drone was part of those search and rescue efforts, but at times, water conditions created challenges.
