CHESAPEAKE, Va. — An inmate at the Chesapeake Correctional Center died after a medical emergency early Wednesday morning, deputies said.
An investigation revealed the inmate, Darrell Griffin, had a medical emergency inside the jail, according to the Chesapeake Sherriff's Office.
Staff members called EMS after finding Griffin unresponsive in his cell around 5:45 a.m. They started compressions until medics arrived and took over the compressions. They were unable to revive Griffin. He was pronounced dead.
The Chesapeake Police Department is handling the investigation of the inmate's death under Virginia state law requirements for in-custody deaths. No foul play has been suspected.
The Chesapeake Sheriff's Office said the Medical Examiner's Office will determine the inmate's official cause of death.
