PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced a cruise ship passenger who suffered a stroke and possible internal bleeding on Saturday.

The captain aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway contacted Coast Guard watchstanders in Portsmouth around 10:18 a.m. to report the medical emergency. The ship was about 75 miles southeast of the Chesapeake Bay at the time.

A crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City was conducting training when it was diverted to assist the passenger.

The helicopter crew hoisted the 76-year-old man and a nurse, and brought them to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital.
