A Chesapeake boy scout is determined to help a women's homeless shelter, but he needs your help.

Joey Kemp wants to build a gazebo in front of the Burfoot House.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — It's a place where homeless women can turn their lives around.

The Burfoot House in Chesapeake does wonders for women in need. It provides a place to live and a transitional program for single, homeless women.

Now, Joey Kemp, a high school senior wants to help with a “DIY” project.

“I wanna help give back to the community and Chesapeake has done a lot for me so it was just like, I need to do something for them,” said Kemp.

When the boy scout stumbled onto the Burfoot House, its barren yard told him something could be done to make it better for the women who live inside.

A few years ago, Kemp helped renovate the inside of the transitional home.

He has kept in touch ever since. Now, he’s ready to help out in a new way.

“They came to me and were like, ‘Hey could you help us out in any way?’ I was like, ‘I’ve got you guys, I can build a gazebo for you,” said Kemp.

Kemp wants to give the women a place to sit under the shade and enjoy the outdoors.

“I just wanna make it as relaxing and as comfortable for them as it can be,” said Kemp.

He has it all planned out.

A 12 by 12 slab on concrete and a 10 by 10 gazebo.

Kemp knows exactly what kind of gazebo he'll build and how much it'll cost. In total, he needs $6,000.
Kemp needs to raise the money to get started.

He launched a GoFundMe page to raise the money. He has held car washes on the weekends and with the help of his dad, began selling pulled pork sandwiches to his fellow troops every week.

Kemp said he’ll do whatever it takes to make sure the women receive the gift he promised them.

“The women being happy is probably one of the things I’m looking forward to,” said Kemp.
