NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- It was a historic day on Saturday, as millions marched for their lives across the world. The global protest for gun control could also be found here with numerous marches here in Hampton Roads.

The largest was in Norfolk, where thousands walked through Downtown and demonstrated at Town Point Park.

"It's basically that students are going to take charge and if adults won't make the change and keep us safe in school, then we will," said First Colonial High School student Mattie Anderton. "Then we watch these arguments slowly dwindle with time until eventually, no one seems to be talking about them anymore. This time us kids -- who many have deemed to be incapable of setting change -- will not watch something this important, this tragic, fade out."

But it wasn't just kids who joined the march. Parents came too.

Shana Turner of Newport News lost her son to gun violence.

"Shaquille Turner was killed on December the 12th of 2017 on North Hampton Boulevard, and I'm out here not only for mass shootings but for individual shootings as well."

Turner is hoping the march brings change.

"I'm hoping they can put a stop to gun violence, and who can put their hands on guns."

But for now, Turner marches for all shooting victims.
